Hygge

Hygge

(The Danish word that we love so much and think bears too much special meaning as to translate it to another language – it would be something like ‘cozyness’ or ‘Gemütlichkeit’ though, if you made the attempt ;-))

Wednesday was Karina’s birthday and I made a picture with hama-pearls and a cake for her. Due to our close living situation it wasn’t exactly what you would call a surprise. However, the video we made together with the Nuiki-students for her was a big surprise, which was expressed by tears of joy. And as she said herself: she didn’t even cry at her own wedding. :-P After classes we had a little get-together with the school staff and it was already a little goodbye-meeting for us. We all got a crocheted Greenlandic flag and an ‘I <3 Atammik’ magnet. I think the Greenlandic flag, which is only 30 years old, has a beautiful story to it: The white represents the inland ice (Greenland ice sheet) and the red semicircle stands for a setting sun and illustrates the warmth and light that return to the country during midsummer. Of course the colors also show the strong connection to Denmark.

Yesterday was already the second but last time we taught in the Nuiki-project. We have collected all our empirical data for our assignment, finished off our lesson plans and it’s quite sad that we can’t accompany them all the way to their final exams. I will miss them very much. Because we spent so much time together and laughed so much together, I really got attached fast. After classes we went to the gym, which was transformed into ‘Thursday-club’ and we played ‘sæt’. We had so much fun that some others got grumpy, because we laughed too loudly. :-O :-P When the club closed at 10pm, I went on the soccer field with about 15 other young people, where we played tag games in the snow. The northern lights above us were dancing in the sky in beautiful light and dark green colors. It was an indescribable atmosphere. Unfortunately I can’t catch the northern lights with my camera, but I’d also much rather keep the memory in my heart.
